There are three distinct elements to the Family Historian 7 system of templated sources, namely Sources, Templates and Definitions. Sources and Templates are local to individual projects, and are stored in the project GEDCOM file. Definitions are external to the project, and are stored with other program data, such as Fact Sets, Queries and Plugins, making them available to all projects.
Family Historian is supplied with two Source Template Definition collections, Essential and Advanced. In normal use, Source Templates are created from these Definitions, and individual Sources created from Templates. Users can create their own Templates and Definitions, but the hierarchy works in only one direction. You cannot create a Definition from a Template, or a Template from a Source.
One practical consequence of this restriction is that if a Source Template is imported from another compatible application such as RootsMagic, the Template remains local to the original project, and cannot be used elsewhere.
This plugin compares Source Templates in the current project with available Source Template Definitions, and automatically creates any missing Definitions. This makes all Source Templates visible to other projects.
Technical note: Family Historian Source Templates are stored in the C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Source Templates folder, with each Collection in a separate file. They are not included in Family Historian backups, so should be backed up using the Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings via Windows plugin, along with other settings.
Changes made to the definition files (either within the main app or via this plugin) cannot be undone automatically within Family Historian, so must be restored from backup if required.
